The first phase of the Eco-Schools project in Uganda, from 2006-2009, established 15
schools in the South- Western part of Uganda. Teaching materials were produced and
teacher training programmes were implemented in collaboration with the education
authorities.

An external evaluation of the first phase documents revealed that both pupils
and teachers applied new learning in practice both at school and at home. From 2009 –
2013 in Uganda enhanced knowledge and experience with the local partner, further
developed the content of teaching resources of the programme, and set up strategic
cooperation with national teaching institutions. In mid-2013 the Uganda Eco-Schools
programme included a total of 252 primary schools with approximately 2,500 teachers and
100,000 pupils. Good cooperation has been established between a local university and
teachers’ colleges with regards to the professional training of teachers.

This provides a good basis for achieving longer term policy goals to institutionalise Eco-Schools approaches in the education sector. In 2014 - 2017 projects in the different countries (Uganda, Tanzania and Malawi) have been gathered under one programme, promoting mutual learning
between partners. This has seen a continuation and remarkable achievement of these
on-going initiatives, with the Eco-Schools programme implemented in 250 selected schools
in 4 districts of Mbarara, Bushenyi, Isingiro and Sheema in South-Western Uganda.

The Eco-Schools programme in Uganda is widely used as a tool for promoting education for
sustainable development, targeting primary schools, local communities and Primary
Teacher Colleges (PTCs). Local government departments and line ministries have also
